Taught by Austin Von Johnson

This is an 8 week class teaching the basics of improv comedy without the pressures of a class show!

You’ll learn all sorts of games and the foundational improv principles needed to play them well. Not only will this class be a lot of fun, these principles also elevate your everyday life by improving communication skills, sparking creativity, and helping you step outside your comfort zone. Between work, bills, and life responsibility, it can be difficult to have the spontaneity and imagination we had when we were kids. This class is here to help change that! Whether you are looking to spread your creative wings, or find them in the first place, this class is a great opportunity to let go of stress and judgement and just play!

About Improv
Improvisational theatre, or improv, refers to a live theatre art form in which the plot, characters, and dialogue or all made up on the spot. This can happen in short form games (think Whose Line Is It Anyway?), or long form, where entire narratives are made up unscripted!

Regardless of the style, performers are able to accomplish this by following basic principles. Things like listening & reacting, being present, making others look good, and many more including the most foundational: Yes And.

“Yes And” involves simply saying “Yes” to and accepting things we are presented with, “And” building - giving something back to move the story and scene forward. Of course, many of these principles are applicable in everyday life and you will find through this class that improv play will exercise behavioral and emotional muscles unlike anything else!

Why Should You Take This Class?
Even though this class is primarily to teach basic improv principles and games, the life applications are endless!

Here are just a few reasons why you should take this class:

  • For Fun & Games - Break the monotony and spice up your routine! Life is crazy, and you deserve to have one night to leave stress at the door and just play. You will also learn some games to take to game nights, family reunions, barbecues, church events, road trips, office holiday parties, wherever!

  • For the Art Form - This class will teach the basics of improv theatre. Do you want to try improv as a performing art? This is where you begin! Even if your artistic future is not as an improviser, if you are an actor, emcee, musician, or performer of any kind - you will learn techniques to enhance your art. From a performance standpoint, improv theatre exercises your ability to perform and react without a script, cue cards, outline, or plan of any kind! Enhance your performance abilities with improv.

  • For Your Life & Work - Even though this is improv for fun, it will exercise principles that are applicable all over life! Things like listening & communication, creativity, vulnerability, selflessness, innovation, and more! Come exercise your cognitive, behavioral, and emotional muscles while you play.
